24 Hours in Masbate: What to do and where to eat and stay

 Day Tour

“Are we there yet?”

“Beshy, we’ll arrive there by 12 midnight.”

“Yes, I know. It just feels like we’re not moving at all.”

HA-HA-HA

We both laughed because many of the passengers were sound asleep, while we were stressing ourselves about getting to our destination fast.

So we slept like locals did, sans our bodies occupying the whole seat.

Is Camotes Island Cebu's Best-Kept Secret?

Secluded and underdeveloped – this group of islands in Cebu can be reached in one and a half hours via a fast craft vessel. Its prime islands are hosts to beachfront resorts whose infinity pools got the overlooking pristine beach for a background. Equally rustic are the other natural attractions in the area and with a vibe as relaxed and unhurried. Camotes Island hopefully would stay that way – that is, as Cebu’s arguably best-kept secret.

Potipot Island, Candelaria, Zambales

Potipot Island is a small island located in Barangay Uacon, Candelaria town. The island is just a mere 5 to 10 minutes boat ride from the mainland of Luzon. There are no big resort in the island, however, there are cottages that you can rent if you’re planning for an overnight stay but it is advisable that you bring your own tent. An electric generator provides electricity to the island. There is also a source of fresh water in the island. Potipot has a cream-colored sand beach. The island is small that you can even circle the entire island for  less than an hour.

Apo Island, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro

Apo Island is one of the islands in Apo Reef Natural Park. In fact, it is the largest island in the Apo Reef. There are other islands near the Apo Island but all of them are just small islands. The Apo Island is a protected area and it is being managed by the government. Police, Bantay Dagat, Navy and the municipal government protects the island and serves as the security and caretaker of Apo Reef Natural Park. Apo Island is known for diving due to the vastness of coral reefs around the island. There’s an abundance of marine life around the island. There is also a mangrove forest and a lighthouse in the island. There is no resort in Apo Island but there are several cottages and a large function hall that can be rented by visiting guests. Fresh water is not available in the island. An electric generator provides electricity for Apo Island. One thing that you’ll need to do before going to Apo Island/Apo Reef is to secure a permit from the Municipal Government of Sablayan.

Anvaya Cove, Philippines

Almost a year ago, my friend Marietere and me went to Anvaya Cove beach and Nature Club which is located in Moron, Bataan. Going from Metro Manila is like 3 hours away by car.

Boracay!

Day 1

The flight tickets range depending on when you buy it and there are also some promos. Regarding the hotel it was like 20-25$ per night including a very good breakfast. The best thing about this hotel is that the location is excellent and the rooms are very clean and nice. Take notice that the prices changes depending if it is high season or low season.

Banaue Rice Terraces

Transportation: There is a daily bus trip from Manila to Banaue that leaves at 10:00 pm. and it arrives back to Manila at 3:30am. The transit companies playing this route are Autobus and Dangwa Tranco, and both have terminals in Sampaloc, Manila. It is better to buy the ticket in advanced, to make sure there are tickets left.

Mt. Daraitan and Tinipak River

When we were in Manila with my friend Mari Tere we wanted to do something different, so our friend Cha, who is passionate for the mountains told us to go with her to hike Mt. Daraitan on June 1, 2014. Mt. Daraitan is located near the border of Tanay, Rizal and General Nakar, Quezon.

Engkanto Falls and Engkanto Cave ft. Tinkerbell and Peter Pan

Engkanto Waterfalls Cascades, Tinkerbell & Peter Pan at Engkanto Cave, Rappelling Engkanto Falls
When was the last time you did something for the first time? This question always tickles my mind when I think about the first time my husband and I tried waterfall abseiling. I never knew this kind of outdoor activity could fulfill my dream to go extreme! Guess where the escapade took place? In the wild where the mystical waterfalls called "Engkanto" hide. Let me take you there while I travel back in time..

Body surfing with a sea turtle {El Nido, Philippines}

Sometimes, I want to discover what a place really has to offer, almost as if I was a local. Therefore on a holiday such as this, there is, more often than not, no better way to discover the hidden gems of a place than to put on those shoes and hit the dirt.  I believe it was Robert Frost that wrote:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

Palawan is no different. There is so much of the island that hasn’t been commercialized, that’s rugged, muddy, overgrown and lush; and may leave you with a few bumps and scratches.  So what? We only live once.

We found numerous small secluded beaches, overgrown paths that lead to breathtaking views and bamboo houses that stand guard over miles of rice paddies. Ultimately our 6 days had come to an end and it was time to say our farewells before heading off on the last leg of our adventure – Sabang.

Bugsukan: The Beach, The Waterfalls and The Cliffs!

Road trip for two is lovely for my birthday today! Except, we don't have the luxury of time. We need to be at home by lunch for a simple family salo-salo. We can't be going too far so we decided to go to Tiwi, Albay.

What do we have in Tiwi?  We may have some halo-halo in DJC? Collect some ceramic jars and pottery maybe? Why not? But we can always do more.. We heard about some waterfalls spots in Tiwi so let's have them googled first. Bugsukan sounds very promising due to it's accessibility straight from the national road of  Brgy. Misibis in Tiwi. That's exactly what we need right now given that we don't have much time. So, let's give it a try.

Driving from Daraga to Tiwi  at dawn is fast and easy. It's more or less 35 minutes of drive. However, Bugsukan takes maybe 25 more minutes from Tiwi town proper. The morning is still young so we can take some side trips along the way whenever the spell of nature allures. How can we we not stop by the greenish and yellowish rice fields alongside?  Never can we ignore the inspiriting mood set by "Our Lady of Salvation" structure along the coastal road elevation. We need to take a moment for sure.

4 days and 3 nights in Coron, Palawan!

Airline: Cebu Pacific
Ticket price: 120 $ approx. both ways
Important: They only accept cash

Hotel: Busuanga Island Paradise, we went from Jan 3-6. A van will pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. It is more like a lodge, we rented a house, which was for 3 persons for 89 $ per night and it included buffet breakfast, free wi-fi and a pool. If you want to be in contact with the nature and disconnect a little bit, this is the ideal place. The bad thing is that the hotel is 12km away from the town, but on the other hand, the van will take you from the hotel to the town and vice versa for free. The last van that goes from the town to the hotel is at 8 pm, so if you want to stay longer in the town, you can take a tricycle for 600 pesos approx. for all the people who fit in the tricycle.

7 Falls (Busay Falls) Trek - Malilipot Albay

I never really truly understand my purpose in life until I saw the world in your eyes.
Let's begin with our spin from our home sweet home. It was Yan's birthday (my husband). We had an effortless surprised party for him, sponsored by Mum. (Thanks Mum for the mouthwatering seafood dishes! The spicy squid from 4Seasons Restaurant was superb! Yummy! hehehe.)

Originally, Our plan was to go to Busay Falls in Malilipot, Albay right after lunch. However, due to time lapse incurred by the surprise birthday bash, we had to move the short trip the next day. But we really couldn't yield to our getaway plan. So, we decided to go night swimming at El Carlos, a nearby pool resort.

The Russian called Vlad {El Nido, Palawan, Philippines}

When in Rome do as the Romans do, when in El Nido…island hop. Island hopping is definitely the way to go and there are 4 different tours available to choose from.  Each tour (A, B, C & D) visits 5 different islands/beaches/caves/inlets and includes a delicious lunch consisting of grilled fish, chicken, pork and a selection of fresh fruits. The tour leaves Bacuit Bay at around 9am each morning and returns at about 4pm.

Cliff Jumping in Bugsukan - Misibis, Tiwi, Albay

Rap jumping like a crane!
An overnight survivor-like adventure in Atulayan white-sand beach (camping with torch) seemed not enough to feed our hunger for thrill. On our boat ride back to Tiwi, we dropped by the shore of Bugsukan beach and falls in Brgy. Misibis, Tiwi, Albay. Well, this was really part of the plan without our friends knowing. They at least thought it was a sudden side trip.

Very rare moment.. when you get to see waterfalls facing the grayish slash brownish powdery-sand beach.. I have one word for it... surreal! Not long before, Yan and I had been here to celebrate my birthday. We made a short coastal hike and we witnessed the waterfalls by the beach for the first time. Soon, we found several cliffs nearby. We promised to come back and jump.

Death by coconut {El Nido, Palawan, Philippines}

Complete silence. Maybe they forgot. It’s pitch-black in our twin-bed room. Well, for the most part, if you ignore the flashing neon sign of the Airport Hotel outside our window. A melodious noise (my cell phone alarm) increases in volume as I make the transition from dreamland to consciousness. I roll around and shut it off.

Its 5 o’clock in the morning, in Manila, and time to hit the showers before grabbing a breakfast on our way to the Airport. Our flight to Palawan departs at 07h30. Our 9 day adventure of beaches, coconuts, massages and remote islands is about to start.

We head downstairs to eat and check out. We have lots of time. I look over the counter at the clock on the wall. Sh*t. They forgot the wake-up call. We realize that it is in fact 06h30. Rushing out of the hotel we grab the nearest taxi (which turned out to be the Hotel managers’) and head off towards Terminal 3 (30min away). It’s like an episode from the Amazing Race, except that we aren’t racing against teams but against time and there’s no Million Dollar Prize. In the end we make the flight by the skin of our teeth. I guess it goes without saying that it’s always more fun in the Philippines.

Hike Taal Volcano

Since we had two more weekends left in the Philippines, my friend Alberto and me  decided to go to the Taal Volcano on June 28, 2014. We choose this destination because it was close to Manila and because is the world´s smallest active volcano, so we wanted to give it a try!
